Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Chooses MediaStream Networked Storage System From Pinnacle Systems

April 19, 2001

CBC Will Use System to Centralize Storage and Playout of Programming For Network-Wide Distribution

Pinnacle Systems, Inc. today announced that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Canada's national public broadcaster, has selected Pinnacle Systems' new MediaStream Networked Storage system for its Toronto-based network control center. The server system, supplied by Pinnacle Systems distributor Acura Technology Group, will be installed in the CBC's Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto and used for centralizing storage and play-out of programs and interstitial programming material for network-wide distribution.

"CBC's selection of our new MediaStream Networked Storage over the competition is a very significant validation of this solution," said Bob Wilson, President, Broadcast Solutions Group at Pinnacle Systems. "The decision reflects not only a belief in the reliability and strength of the technology, but an affirmation of the direction Pinnacle Systems is heading for the future. We believe that as broadcasters around the world look to operate more efficiently and economically, the switch to a rationalized implementation of central storage will become the industry standard. The CBC has again demonstrated why it is recognized as one of the world's most sophisticated broadcasters."

The CBC cited three primary technical reasons for choosing MediaStream: (1) the ability to streamline the existing process of program and interstitial content distribution through the use of a shared storage area network; (2) the ability to eliminate high maintenance mechanical systems; and (3) MediaStream's expandability, which will allow the CBC to economically scale to meet future program delivery demands.

MediaStream Networked Storage provides all servers with simultaneous access to all content stored on the network. The ability to share storage allows the CBC to simplify program preparation processes, automation requirements and media management.

"The CBC's decision to implement a shared storage video server network is the first adaptation of this technology in Canada and we are honored to have been chosen," said Wilson. "The mission-critical nature of the application presents a tremendous technical challenge and our Networked Storage delivers a solution with superior reliability, complete redundancy, scalability and in-depth system monitoring."

The CBC, created in 1936, is Canada's national public broadcasting service, operating two main television networks, one in English, one in French. It also operates four radio networks, two all-news cable television networks and an international short-wave radio service broadcasting in seven languages.
