Discreet Announces Versatile HDTV and 601 Finishing Solutions for Multi-Master Editing
April 23, 2001
Discreet, a division of Autodesk Inc. today announced that its award-winning, non-linear online finishing system smoke ® will offer real-time, HDTV input/output with Multi-Master Editing ™ capabilities for SGI's new high-performance Silicon Graphics ® Octane2 ™ visual workstation with DMediaPro ™ DM2 and the SGI Onyx ® 3000 series with DMediaPro ™ DM3. smoke and fire ® are the industry's first unified finishing solutions with Multi-Master Editing features that produce high-definition and standard definition PAL and NTSC masters from a single high-definition project. Discreet is demonstrating Multi-Master Editing using a variety of recognizable film and television projects created with smoke and fire at NAB this year (Sands Convention Center S-4100). NAB visitors will see how online editors can take wide screen, high-definition masters in smoke or fire and finish to a wide array of formats for worldwide broadcast distribution.
Supporting the new Octane2 with DMediaPro DM2 and Onyx 3000 series with DMediaPro DM3 platforms, smoke and fire will offer enormous improvements in cost, workflow and system utilization by removing the current significant expense of external black box format converters or traditional costs associated with transferring projects to standard definition systems.
"As broadcasters and television post-production facilities transition to HD as the production format of choice, they will benefit from Discreet's optimized solutions for delivering multiple masters," said Paul Lypaczewski, general manager of Discreet and executive vice president, Autodesk, Inc. "With support for these new SGI platforms, Discreet's smoke and fire deliver format flexibility and editing power on versatile workstations."
"Discreet's effects and editing solutions have always been optimized to take advantage of the graphics and bandwidth capabilities of the latest Silicon Graphics workstations and digital media products," said Greg Estes, vice president and general manager, Telecommunications and Media, SGI. "The powerful combination of Discreet inferno ® effects and fire editing systems with SGI Onyx 3000 series with DMediaPro DM3 delivers the most robust solution for real-time HD, film mastering, multi-stream SD and stunning visual effects work.
