Industry Leaders Discreet and da Vinci Partner to Offer Powerful Film Cleaning Product
April 23, 2001
Discreet, a division of Autodesk Inc., today announced that they have reached an agreement with da Vinci Systems to develop and offer a specialized dust and dirt removal software package called Discreet revival ™ . Under the terms of the agreement, da Vinci will develop the software and Discreet will market, sell and distribute revival to their worldwide broadcast and post-production customer base seeking advanced methods of perfecting traditionally manual film cleaning techniques.
"Our state-of-the-art film cleaning and image corrections software and Discreet's premier family of compositing and editing solutions are a wonderful compliment to each other," said Michael Arbuthnot, president of da Vinci. "The enhancements Discreet revival brings to Discreet's toolset offer a synergy that is unparalleled in the film marketplace." Discreet revival removes unwanted defects such as scratches, blotches and dust particles found on digital images after the film-to-digital transfer post-production process. Instead of using traditional cleaning methods such as chemical solvents or time-consuming paint-by- hand scratch and dust removal methods, revival removes defects in the background using Discreet's backdraft ™ media management and I/O utility. backdraft operates in a VTR emulation mode, allowing the da Vinci colorist to view and pre-select elements for cleaning, then "revive" the footage by performing automatic cleaning in the background. Once cleaned, the elements are pushed by backdraft into the creative bay without interrupting ongoing sessions and enabling better facility systems use.
"da Vinci is revered in the film industry for their market-leading image correction, restoration and enhancement solutions used in most commercials, television shows and music videos," said Paul Lypaczewski, general manager of Discreet and executive vice president, Autodesk. "By teaming with da Vinci to create revival, Discreet continues its commitment to provide useful, integrated solutions that give our post-production and broadcast customers cost-competitive advantages through increased efficiencies."
