Microsoft could miss deadline for European interactive TV debut

August 11, 2000

Microsoft's introduction of its interactive TV platform in the European cable market could fall short of meeting its September deadline, according to news reports.

Amsterdam-based cable company United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC), which had planned on introducing advanced digital set-tops for interactive TV services at the end of September, still expects to roll out its service on time -- but with far less capability than first promised.

Microsoft says it could provide a minimum of software that would include a web browser, for example, and give customers the chance to download more advanced applications as they become available later on. UPC originally planned to offer a variety of services including personal video recording capability, voice communication and video on demand. Philips and Motorola, which are manufacturing the boxes, say they will deliver on schedule.

The delay could mar Microsoft's much-touted entry into the European cable market. Besides its 8 percent stake in UPC, Microsoft also has 23.7 percent stake in UK cable company Telewest and a deal to supply its interactive software with Pace, Europe's largest manufacturer of set tops.
