Microsoft is expanding its relationship with Chyron (Melville, NY) to work together to integrate Chyron's character generation and streaming media services to the Microsoft TV platform. In addition, Microsoft has agreed to make a $6 million minority equity investment in Chyron.

As part of the agreement, Chyron will optimize its Lyric creation and playbacks graphics for interactive TV services, develop tools for inserting interactive TV data into the broadcast stream, develop previewing tools for content creators using the Microsoft TV platform and optimize its streaming technologies for the Windows Media player.

In addition, Microsoft and Chyron will collaborate on designing new software for the Microsoft.NET initiative and will help coordinate Microsoft's work with television-standards bodies worldwide. The two companies previously worked on developing graphics for Microsoft's WebTV service.

"By teaming with such an established and successful member of the television industry, we believe we can speed the availability of enhanced TV services and ensure that network operators and content developers get the right tools to quickly, efficiently and effectively bring enhanced TV to their viewers," said Alan Yates, VP of sales and marketing for Microsoft TV.
