Liberate expands Japanese presence

Liberate Technologies (San Carlos, CA) has formed Liberate Technologies Japan, K.K., a wholly owned subsidiary headquartered in Tokyo.

Liberate anticipates an increase in demand for its interactive TV platform in Japan with the launch of satellite-based digital broadcasting services by the end of this year. It's Japanese subsidiary will sell, market and provide technical support services for the region as well as operate a Japan Development Center to tailor Liberate's software for the Japanese market. Masayuki Miyawki, who previously worked for Veritas Software, Informix and Data General, will head up the operation.

Liberate has existing relationships with Japanese companies NTT Communications, Marubeni Corp., Interactive Cable Communications Inc., Soltec Japan Co., Ltd., ViewNet Systems Inc., and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
