Motorola, Liberty Media invest in streaming-media start up
November 16, 2000
The new company -- which will officially launch its platform for broadband at Streaming Media West next month in San Jose -- has not provided much detail on its technology other than to say it will "deliver the industry's highest quality streaming media to homes and businesses with broadband Internet access."
The company's backers, however, give the company a leg up among the competition, with Motorola's dominance in the broadband market and Liberty Media, (until yesterday) the AT&T digital content subsidiary.
"Streaming media is an important element of Motorola's strategy," says Edward Breen, exec VP and president of Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector, and a member of Aerocast's board of directors. "We believe that Aerocast is creating a broadband delivery service that is expected to dramatically transform the Internet video content distribution market."
Aerocast's management team includes co-founder and CTO Nathan Raciborski, who formerly co-founded Axient, an Internet content delivery backbone company based in Phoenix. President and CEO Thomas J. Lynch, is also the corporate VP and GM for Motorola's Satellite and Broadcast Network Systems.
