The Vidicoder Video Codec Module permits real-time digital transmission of video over extremely narrow-band channels. The unit's small size makes it suitable for virtually any airborne or ground-based platform. Advanced videocompression techniques, based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) with inter-frame (frame to frame difference) coding, is used. Motion compensation further increases the performance of the inter-frame or panning of the scene. This technique out-performs Motion JPEG technology by as much as 10:1. The compression algorithm is firmware controlled and can be modified for special applications.
The encoder can be operated at any output data rate from 16 Kbps up to its maximum of 3 Mbps. At high bit rates, quality which is virtually indistinguishable from the input can be achieved. An internal clock is provided which allows a choice of 7 data rates. These rates are binary divisions of an interanl crystal oscillator which is typicaly 2.0 Mbps. An external clock input port is also provided for a user supplied clock. The decoder is completely controlled by the data from the encoder.
The Vidicoder is very flexible. It can be configured as an encoder for video acquisition and compression, as a decoder for decompression and video output, or as both for duplex applications.
Other optional capabilities include audio compression and the ability to multiplex video, audio, and/or data into the output data stream. The basic package consists of a 3.325" x 5" PC card suitable for installation into a variety of reconnaissance/surveillance systems.
Other packaging options include: ruggedized box, rack mount unit, and various computer bus cards.
