WKYC Makes News With Avid Broadcast Cleveland-Based Affiliate of Gannett Broadcasting Completes State-of-the-Art Digital News Production Environment with Using Avid Systems
April 9, 2001
Avid Technology, Inc. today announced that WKYC in Cleveland, Ohio successfully installed a fully-integrated Avid(R) Broadcast environment and completed its conversion from analog to digital-based news production. The station's Avid Broadcast environment includes two Avid Unity(TM) for News shared media networks, including 13 NewsCutter(R) Effects systems; 22 NewsCutter XP nonlinear editing system clients; and two Avid AirSPACE(TM) production servers. An Avid iNEWS(TM) Newsroom Computer System was in place prior to the conversion and has been integrated with Avid's Broadcast environment. WKYC's digital news production environment enables faster, higher quality news delivery by using the most capable and thoroughly integrated news production system available.
"We are in the middle of a transformation in broadcasting that will forever change the way news is gathered, produced and viewed," said Matthew Danilowicz, vice president of Avid's broadcast division. "We celebrate WKYC because they are among those leading the way for other broadcasters by demonstrating the effectiveness in the digital newsroom. Since WKYC went live in early January, they have shown that producing news in a total Avid-enabled broadcast environment delivers reliability, ease, quality and unmatched efficiency."
WKYC has two workgroups that benefit from the shared media and asset management capabilities of Avid Unity for News media network. The station's 22 NewsCutter XP systems help journalists create and rough edit stories, while the other workgroup -- comprised of 13 NewsCutter Effects systems - focuses on final editing of news segments. Each systems has its own MediaManager system for managing media clips and stories and a dedicated TransferManager system for moving video between the two workgroups, as well as from the two AirSPACE servers used for ingest and playout respectively.
WKYC has standardized on the DV25 format and maintains native DV25 video throughout the entire production and playout process so it is not necessary to convert to other formats, which degrades signal quality.
