AudioFlat Multi-Pair Flat Cables

Source: Belden Electronics Division
Belden announces it's multi-pair flat cable specifically designed for both analog and digital audio applications.
Belden's new AudioFlat cable line is designed to offer superior electrical characteristics and allow for fast, labor saving wiring of multi-channel audio devices.

This unique, state-of-the-art cable provides audio performance comparable to conventional cabling, but because it can be connectorized with IDC connectors (insulation displacement connectors), it offers manufacturers the opportunity to save more than 90% in installation costs. IDCs produce dramatic labor savings compared to point-to-point, crimp or soldered hand wiring.

OEMs will quickly find that AudioFlat cables are the perfect choice for quick, cost efficient internal wiring of multi-channel devices such as mixers, consoles, patch panels, and recording and playback devices.

Unique Construction Means Easy Connectorization
AudioFlat consists of twisted pairs and a single ground wire laminated to a substrate. Every eighteen inches, the twisted pairs transition into a flat section for two inches, allowing for fast, easy connectorization. By contrast, connectorization of conventional audio snake cables is a highly inefficient, labor-intensive operation.

AudioFlat is similar to Belden's popular Vari-Twist® flat cable -- but with an important difference: AudioFlat also contains a single conductor between the twisted pairs to provide characteristics and operation similar to the drain wire found in standard single-pair or multi-pair snake cables.

Designed for Protected Environments
AudioFlat has been designed specifically for use in protected environments such as internal wiring permanently installed inside equipment cabinets. With its unique construction of twisted pairs and ground wires, AudioFlat can also replace multi-pair (multi-core) snake cable in short-run applications.

Conventional snake cable is still the recommended choice for applications where cables are repeatedly installed and removed, such as ENG/EFP, sound trucks, rock band equipment, or portable PA systems. Belden also offers a complete line of audio snake cables for these applications.

Outstanding Performance Characteristics
The performance of AudioFlat cables makes them suitable for operation in both analog and AES/EBU digital audio applications. DC resistance is 68.2 ohms per 100 feet, with nominal impedance of 110 ohms ±20% at 3 MHz.

Unshielded versions offer a capacitance of 16.7 pF/foot at 1 kHz and 13 pF/foot at 1 MHz. Crosstalk is a very low 98 dB at 20 kHz and 56 dB at 3 Mhz. Attenuation is 0.43 dB/100 feet at 1 kHz and 1.75 dB/foot at 3 MHz.

Shielded versions offer a capacitance of 16.8 pF/foot at 1 kHz and 13 pF/foot at 1 MHz. Crosstalk is a low 80 dB at 20 kHz and 56 dB at 3 MHz. Attenuation is 0.43 dB/100 feet at 1 kHz and 2.05 dB/foot at 3 MHz.

Product Availability
AudioFlat is available in 4-, 8-, 12- or 16-pair configurations, and in both unshielded and overall foil-shielded versions. Custom pair counts can also be accommodated up to a maximum of 16 pairs and 16 singles.

Color Coded for Further Application Ease
Each AudioFlat pair consists of a tan conductor paired with a color-coded conductor and green groundwire. The color sequence of each terminating section is:
