Conexant's Solution Selected By Skyworth Digital For New Cable Set-Top Boxes

Newport Beach, CA - Conexant Systems, Inc., a worldwide leader in semiconductor solutions for broadband communications and the digital home, recently announced that Skyworth Digital has chosen the company's highly integrated cable set-top box (STB) MPEG decoder for a new family of digital video broadcast cable (DVB-C) receivers for the Chinese marketplace. Skyworth Digital is a leading supplier of DVB STBs and value-added systems in China, and one of Asia's top consumer electronics manufacturers. Skyworth's model C3000 STB is slated for deployment in the People's Republic of China's Hubei and Jiangsu provinces this year.

"Our expertise in set-top box technologies allowed us to develop a very cost-effective, high-performance cable solution for basic digital television applications," said Lewis Brewster, executive vice president and general manager of Conexant's Broadband Media Processing business. "We are pleased to have teamed with Skyworth Digital on this project, and that our technology will be used to provide consumers in China with an economical set-top box that enables them to watch TV programs with high-quality video resolution."

"We chose Conexant as our semiconductor provider because of the unmatched performance of their cable solution, and their proven ability to consistently deliver high-quality products," said Dr. Wang Xiaohui, R&D general manager of Skyworth Digital. "Their customer support is also excellent, and the availability of technical resources throughout China enables us to launch our new receivers more quickly."

Skyworth's new one-way C3000 STB receiver is based on the DVB standard for the Chinese digital cable television market, and features integrated support for Novel-Tongfang Co. Ltd.'s conditional access solution. This technology allows the content provider to protect against illegal copying or access by unauthorized users. Additional features include an electronic programming guide (EPG) that enables viewers to use their remote control to select content in a variety of ways including by time, title, or channel.

Conexant's MPEG decoder combines a programmable transport stream processor, MPEG-2 audio/video decoder, an advanced 2D graphics hardware accelerator, on-screen display controller, TV encoder, and USB 2.0 interface with a high-performance ARM946 processor. The high level of integration enables manufacturers to simplify product development efforts while lowering bill-of-material costs.

Conexant offers a comprehensive suite of digital STB components and system solutions for worldwide satellite, terrestrial, cable and IP entertainment broadcasting networks. The company's product offering includes silicon tuners, demodulators, MPEG audio and video decoders, and dial-up modems for back-channel applications. Complete reference designs that help manufacturers reduce cost and speed time-to-market are also available, bundled with a range of operating systems, middleware, drivers and development tools.
