Brazilian broadcaster taps Ampex for content management

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Ampex Data Systems Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Ampex Corp., today announced that the second largest Brazilian television network has selected its DST video server archive system to support a fully-integrated digital broadcast solution designed and developed by Videodata, also based in Brazil.

According to Alfonso Aurin Palacin, Jr., superintendent of engineering of Sistema Brasileiro de Televisao (SBT), the new content management system represents the culmination of months of research which concluded that tape libraries will better support his needs of velocity, longevity and price, instead of optical disk solutions.

"Ampex was selected for its years of experience and knowledge of the broadcast market and for the performance achieved with their robotics and DST tape drive technology," Palacin said. "Our project is a changing of paradigm, a new concept, that will help in the organization of the current and upcoming content. It is also the first step of a bigger project for the total elimination of videotape recorders and their replacement with data tape drives."
Videodata designed the SBT system with Ampex's new DST 714 Data Tape Library; Avalon's archive management software; Grass Valley's Profile PDR-324 MPEG-2 Video Server; the Informix Media 360 Content Management System; and SGI's Origin and NT Servers.

"Broadcasters making the transition to video server-based playback must consider the archive requirements for near-line storage of a facility's programming," said John Hennessy, director of video and broadcast marketing for Ampex Data Systems. "To meet these needs, Ampex, Avalon and Grass Valley Group have integrated their respective product lines to create a state-of-the-art, seamless video server archive environment."

"We are proud to integrate and install the most dependable and highest performing video server archive for broadcasters with superior cost-performance benefits," said A. Leonel da Luz of Videodata. "By showing broadcasters the advantages of networked digital video, our company is helping our clients improve their video operations by an order of magnitude."

Ampex DST automated cartridge libraries are high-performance, reliable digital archives with unlimited expansion capabilities to accommodate a facility's growing video storage requirements. The DST library reduces the overall time required to archive and restore program elements to a network of video servers. For the large number of broadcast and video houses currently using video servers, Ampex offers a bundled solution specifically designed for the broadcasting environment that meets all requirements for a compatible near-line archive to achieve complete automation.
