Two new additions to the SGI VPro graphics family-V10 and V12-offer fast, highly advanced features, with up to two times the geometry performance of competing systems. The Octane2 visual workstation, based on the company's IRIX operating system, is a feature-rich workstation that delivers superior performance for creative and technical professionals in the MCAD, digital media, visual simulation, medical imaging and geosciences markets.

With the new V12 graphics, Octane2 workstations draw over 18 million 1 pixel lit depth-buffered, Gouraud-shaded triangles per second and maintaining a highly advanced pixel fill rate of 448 megapixels per second. This geometry and fill-rate performance firmly establishes Octane2 V12 graphics above the published results of UNIX desktop systems from other vendors.

The new V12 graphics deliver superior image clarity with support for 48-bit RGBA (red, green, blue, alpha) color, double-buffered with a 16-bit Z buffer for this feature. This rich, progressive feature set combined with industry-leading geometry and pixel fill rate performance makes Octane2 V12 one of the industry's most advanced visualization platforms on the desktop.

All the Octane2 VPro graphics solutions offer unprecedented feature sets, such as the recently introduced asynchronous texture download for advanced texture management. When implemented in an application, this unique capability streamlines texture downloads for optimum graphics performance when processing large textures. Other VPro graphics advanced features for Octane2 include:
• Hardware acceleration of all OpenGL 1.2 core features and ARB (Architectural Review Board) imaging extensions
• Hardware-accelerated specular shading with normal interpolation for Phong effects without a performance penalty
• 12-bit per component RGBA
• Configurable graphics memory
