NewsShare system offers real-time performance, scalability, integration with Grass Valley ingest, editing, browse, playout products

Nevada City, Calif., March 1, 2002 – The Grass Valley Group today expanded its digital news production capabilities with the announcement of the Grass Valley™ NewsShare™ shared-storage system. Designed to flex with the frantic production pace of broadcast news, the NewsShare system enables journalists to simultaneously view and edit feeds and edit the same material in different bays simultaneously—even start work on a sequence in one edit bay and finish it in another.

Leveraging the same infrastructure that supports the Grass Valley Media Area Network™ shared-storage system, the NewsShare system provides real-time performance, architectural scalability, exhaustive media search capabilities, and tight integration with the Grass Valley Group's news ingest, browse, editing, and playout systems.

As part of the Digital News Production Solution, the NewsShare system joins the FeedClip™ interactive feed capture system, the NewsEdit™ nonlinear editor, the NewsQ™ manual playback system, and the NewsQ Pro automated playback control system, the Profile® XP Media Platform for ingest and playout, and the Profile Network Archive.

The Grass Valley Group also announced two new additions to its Digital News Production Solution today: the laptop-based NewsEdit LT nonlinear editor and the NewsBrowse desktop browsing system (see "Grass Valley Group Unveils Laptop-Based Nonlinear Editor For Hard News" and "Grass Valley Group Adds Low-Resolution Browsing To Digital News Production Solution").

HIGH EFFICIECY MEDIA POOL FOR DEADLINE-DRIVEN NEWS PRODUCTION

The NewsShare system acts as high-efficiency shared media environment enabling multiple editors to simultaneously share source media and play finished packages directly to air. Its asset-management database lets users easily locate clips, subclips, and sequences—and its compliance with the Grass Valley Group's ContentShare™ open software platform for information access and exchange provides system-wide media access. An editor can create a story in one edit bay, for example, break for lunch and finish the story in another edit bay.

The highly scalable NewsShare system supports up to 48 channels of video, terabytes of storage, and MPEG and DVCPRO materials at data rates up to 50 Mb/s. News organizations can build a NewsShare system from the ground up or add one to an existing workgroup of NewsEdit and Profile XP Media Platform systems. To ensure high availability, the system features a no-single-point-of-failure design, redundant key components, and SNMP-based remote monitoring.

The NewsShare system is highly configurable and priced from $170,000. The system is scheduled to be available in the second quarter of 2002.
