Lucasfilm Set to Test Industry’s First 24p HD Cameras from Sony and Panavision
Sony Electronics and Panavision will soon deliver the first prototype 24 frame progression high-definition camera system to Lucasfilm for testing in anticipation for use in shooting the next two Star Wars films.

As announced earlier this year, Sony and Panavision are collaborating on the new high definition camera system that utilizes the 1080I, 24 fps (frames per second) standard that—through sheer industry support—is fast becoming the format of choice for mastering.

Rick McCallum, producer of Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace, inspects the new 24 p prototype HD video camera from Sony and Panavision.

The move is, in effect, the biggest challenge yet to the future of film vs. videotape and is expected to greatly affect the cost and availability of film and television production for HDTV. Several west-coast production facilities are this month installing the industry's first 24 fps editing suites, (see Is Hollywood Going Hi-Def? -- Laser Pacific, APS Take Delivery on 1080p/24 Systems).

The camera system marries the new 24 frame progression scan 1920x1080 digital camera developed by Sony with a special new series of 2/3 inch lenses and accessories specifically developed and manufactured by Panavision.
