Matrox RT2000 answers the call for Griefilm's production of 681-0638
"Shooting in digital format provided a lot of flexibility on the set," says Ari Grief, writer, director and producer of "681-0638." "The camera set-ups were quicker than with film, so I had time to shoot more scenes on a given day. This allowed the actors, and myself, the opportunity to experiment and improvise, because we could have many different takes of a shot, rather than limiting ourselves to just two or three. We ended up shooting over 15 hours of footage, so for "681-0638," a 90-minute project, that's roughly a 12:1 shooting ratio."
"Matrox RT2000 was key in achieving the film's numerous split-screen effects, fades to black, and graphic overlays," says Neal Evan Caminsky, editor of "681-0638" at Red Dream Studios. "We needed to create a lot of split-screen effects to show the parties on both ends of various telephone conversations throughout the film. The timing of each effect was also an issue, since we shot with only one camera; each individual was shot separately, so we had to match the back-and-forth conversations. In addition, some characters speak in foreign languages, so we used graphic overlay to display English subtitles that we could composite in real time. The RT2000 editing platform saved us an immense amount of time because it gave us the ability to edit-on-the-fly and piece together a seamless dialogue - in real time."
Matrox RT2000 is an affordable realtime editing platform that enables low-budget productions with limited time and resources, such as "681-0638," to go from filming to streaming - all on one platform. "By shooting in DV and using the Matrox RT2000, we were able to focus on the online presence of the film, and stream the trailer to Griefilm's website," says Grief.
