FloMo is a software extension of Ph.C, the company's phase correlation motion estimation technology. For the first time, the company's motion estimation expertise will be available as a software plug-in for animation and special effects professionals.

The software will allow production and post-production artists to change the speed of a film sequence via a user-friendly graphical user interface. Such manipulation of a film sequence is often required for retiming, motion blur and other creative effects. The new software computes motion vectors from which a sequence of in between frames can be constructed in computer and traditional animations. The software features a time-warping capability, which can cut by half or more the number of images that need to be created or rendered to achieve the fluidity of motion desired.

Ph.C (Phase correlation) converts the picture from its usual spatial domain into the frequency domain calculating motion vectors that can be used to 'project' motion with the current frame forwards in time. This technology had been up to now incorporated in equipment such as standards converters, video archive restoration units or motion stabilizers.

The software gives the artist more flexibility and editing capability to enhance the quality of the final output. Special effects professionals are now able to choreograph the dynamics of an image sequence. The software also eliminates the need for time-consuming and expensive solutions, such as the hire of high-speed cameras.

Artists creating effects and digitally manipulating images on inferno and flame will be able to use FloMo as a plug-in for relevant applications. Further platforms will be available over the coming months.
