Conference Marks Introduction of Company's System HD Upconverter and U.S. Debut of Alchemist Platinum Upconverter

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, SMPTE Convention, Booth #150-151, November 4, 2001 — At the upcoming 143rd SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition, Snell & Wilcox, Inc. will address the challenges of real-time archive restoration and high-end standards conversion. Two units featured at the booth utilize Ph.C or Phase Correlation technology, a multi-award winning motion estimation technology unique to Snell & Wilcox.

Making its U.S. debut, Snell & Wilcox will demonstrate its Alchemist Platinum at SMPTE. Introduced at IBC 2001 last month, Alchemist Platinum addresses the higher conversion quality criteria demanded by many broadcasters. It's the world's first motion-compensated, frame-rate converting upconverter. Considered the next logical step in high quality conversion after Alchemist Ph.C, the new Alchemist Platinum also utilizes Ph.C technology and offers improved resolution, lower artifact levels and a noticeable improvement in picture fidelity. The unit also offers an option for high definition upconversion.

Also on display will be the Archangel real-time archive restoration system. Archangel utilizes motion-compensated processing using Ph.C technology for real-time restoration of a wide variety of film and video impairments. Archangel consists of two principal processing elements - an unsteadiness correction processor and a noise reduction processor. A third-party time line controller and disk storage array for control and operation complete the system. New developments to Archangel include a new, advanced dirt filter and a third-party editing system from Tangent Devices that offers a space age control panel for all of Archangel's user control functions.

Snell & Wilcox will introduce a new upconversion module to its System HD family of modular high-definition products. The System HD high definition upconverter provides conversion from 525/625 standard definition to 720p/1080i high definition formats, with 2:2 and 3:2 film processing. Up to 12 Snell & Wilcox System HD modules can be housed in a compact, rugged and easily accessible System HD Enclosure along with an optional control and monitoring board.
