High-end MPEG mastering system features MXF-ready technology

NAB 2002, Snell & Wilcox (Booth L9837) – Snell & Wilcox will introduce the "Ingest Station" at NAB 2002, a professional mastering solution that allows content owners to receive maximum value out of their audio-visual material. Designed as a complete system for file-based content storage and re-purposing, the Ingest Station maximizes asset value and reduces operational costs to optimize storage efficiency at any given quality.

The Ingest Station, to be on display within the "Content Management" section of the Snell & Wilcox booth, incorporates the most advanced Snell & Wilcox developments in multi-standard SD/HD MPEG mastering, including SMPTE recoding data and two Emmy award winning technologies: Prefix MPEG pre-processing and Ph.C motion compensation. The Ingest Station also creates a file incorporating both content and technical metadata, including SMPTE UMID, which references the content to business and legal databases. Automated quality control devices and a simple control workstation guarantee faster turn-around by reducing the need for manual intervention.

According to Francois Abbé, Snell & Wilcox Product Manager, MPEG, modern storage demands are driving content managers to seek out methods that are consistent and reliable while also providing higher value: "Content managers are in need of a complete content mastering and re-purposing solution that not only uses the latest MPEG technology, but also provides a variety of other functions that will allow them to maximize storage potential. The open interface of the Ingest Station, with storage, playout and post-production systems, sets up a Media Asset Management (MAM) friendly solution. Importantly, the Ingest Station is also MXF-ready. Flexibility of file format, resolution and even codec is essential. The system allows you to work in I-frame-only MPEG-2 one day, and in long-GOP MPEG-2 in HD with MPEG-4 browse the next. Quality control is integrated as standard and is therefore easier to manage."

Two prestigious companies will partner with Snell & Wilcox on the Ingest Station at NAB. Ciprico, which designs, manufactures and markets storage system solutions for digital media applications, will demonstrate its DiMeda 2400 storage system. DiMeda 2400 is designed to ingest and archive video content using the new MXF file format, which combines metadata and content in a single file wrapper to provide superior access and archival of digital media assets.

Snell & Wilcox will also partner with dicas, a leading developer of MPEG-4 real-time video coding solutions. The company will show its mpegable MPEG-4 video coding functionalities in collaboration with Ingest Station. Through its mpegable product family, dicas supports the most common profiles of MPEG-4 video, including Advanced Simple Profile and the recently released ISMA specification.

Ingest Station works with a variety of video, audio and file formats in standard and high definition. It is well suited for all ingest applications, including play-out from servers and archival for long-term storage.
