Active noise reduction (ANR) technology is a very effective addition to solving low frequency noise control problems. The electronic coupling of a low frequency noise wave with its exact mirror image, called "anti-noise", cancels this noise.

Designed for maximum protection, the SONEXactive 3000 earmuff is a true breakthrough for the industrial worker. This system combines a comfortable, high-performance industrial ear muff for 21 dB of noise reduction with the added benefit of up to 20 dB of active low frequency noise reduction to provide the most complete level of hearing protection available.
The unique design of the SONEXactive 3000 is completely cordless – the rechargeable nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery module and electronics are integrated into the ear muff, allowing for the ultimate in mobility, comfort and safety.

How the SONEXactive ANR works: The ear muff employs passive dampening materials to avsob noise which is above 500 Hz in frequency. For noise in the 30-5000 hertz frequency range that cannot be effectively attenuated with passive materials, active noise reduction technology is utilized. The active portion of the SONEXactive system operates in the following manner. Microphones within each ear cup sense the low frequency noise. That information is sent to the active noise reduction processor where it is electronically analyzed and a wave 180 degrees out of phase with the noise is generated. This "anti-noise" wave is transmitted via the amplifier to the speaker in the ear cup. When the original noise and the anti-noise couple, the noise is reduced before it gets to the user's ear.

The active system continually adapts, as the environmental noise is constantly changing. Even a slight turn of the users head will change the environmental noise, making adaptability crucial.
