WNBC launches digital broadcasts
Starting Monday, Jan. 8, WNBC is transmitting a digital signal from atop the World Trade Center in Manhattan. WNBC-DT Channel 28 will be in operation from 7 p.m. through 11:30 p.m. during the month of January. The operation will run at reduced power while the first antenna is tuned and adjusted. Two additional antennas atop the World Trade Center, to be completed by February will allow for an expansion of the coverage area.
WNBC has been working with WABC to erect DTV antennas atop the World Trade Center. WABC is the last of the four stations in the largest US metropolitan to as of yet launch digital broadcasts.
"Under the direction of Dennis Swanson, president and general manager of NBC 4, and with the support of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, WNBC has taken the next major step in implementing this digital technology initiative," says WNBC director of engineering Jeff Birch.
"The larger and clearer TV picture and multichannel audio that comes with HDTV greatly enhances the viewing experience, and the potential to broadcast even more information down the road, including streaming data, is a distinct possibility once the HDTV receivers become more affordable," adds Birch.
