WRAL taps Chyron for HD graphics

MELVILLE, N.Y. (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Chyron Corporation, a leading provider of broadcast technology, today announced that WRAL-TV used a platform of graphics systems entirely from Chyron Graphics for the Super Bowl as a springboard for an elegant new on-air look, building out their latest HD and SD graphics suite.

The CBS affiliate now goes to air equipped with a Chyron HD Duet video platform running Chyron's Lyric graphics package, two SD Duets running Chyron's Liberty paint and animation software, a Chyron Aprisa 200 dual stream DDR, and Aprisa 100 Stillstore. Together, the systems form a tightly integrated suite that makes meeting WRAL's graphic needs a highly efficient process.

"This is a brand new facility, and everything from on-air design to stillstore to CG is from one manufacturer: Chyron," says William Reeves, Art Director at WRAL. "The goal of this redesign was to unveil a look in HD and SD that will rival the network's. We needed to strive for a streamlined way of achieving that design, and the Chyron platform is very rich in what it offers us, across the board."

In the WRAL path, their pair of SD Duets with Liberty forms the station's graphical foundation. "Liberty has proved very powerful for us," Reeves reports. "It has the ability to do complex paint and animation in one environment without having to go to a third party. Plus, it's fast."

Next, all graphics are upconverted to the HD Duet, which combines with the advanced Lyric graphics creation and playback package for CG, making an effortlessly clean presentation. The Aprisa 200 DDR and Aprisa 100 move animations and stills through the system with ease. "It just made sense for us to go with one manufacturer, and Chyron delivered," says Reeves. "For platform integration, this approach made things so much faster. Depending on what the graphic is, we can go on-air in as little as a minute."

For delivering maximum impact, WRAL's all-Chyron approach has proved to be a super solution. "We generate a lot of news and graphical content," William Reeves concludes. "We invested a lot of time and energy into generating a clean, elegant and classy new look for WRAL. The quality and speed of the Chyron graphic systems reacting together has been key to making it happen."
